Core Terms

Playbook

  1. Practical: A collection of your team’s best Plays - including who owns the Plays, who collaborates with the owner, where to run the Plays, etc..
  2. Team: How you unify your team’s execution to win - bring together the right people and the right assets/tools -- increasing to play your best.
  3. Abstract: Where your “execution (intellectual) property” lives -- An asset that increases productivity.
  4. Impact: Underpins your team’s execution so that your company can grow & scale with confidence.

Play

  1. A call to action(s) - for achieving an objective.
  2. An effort, by an individual or team, to achieve a result
  3. It is not a task, OKR, Objective, milestone, etc.

Playbook Platform

  1. A collection of Playbooks.

Playmaker

  1. An owner, coordinator, liaison, and/or communicator of Playbook(s)
  2. This individual captures plays and helps configure the playbook.EX. Chief of Staff, Operational leader for a department/function, Team Leader, coordinator,

Executive Sponsor/Playbook Leader

  1. the executive that oversees the team that executes a Playbook.

Playbook Platform Terms

Play Title

  1. Communicated via an imperative sentence with a maximum of 85 characters and with the following syntax:
    Play = [Imperative Action Verb] + [Object] + [Description]

Purpose

  1. Emphasizes Play value
  2. Answers why we are running a Play

Owner

  1. Who drives and is accountable for the Play

Collaborator

  1. The additional teammate(s) who help and support the Play Owner in executing the Play, but is not the sole person responsible for the Play.

Apply

  1. Where the Play is applied - segments (market, product, etc.)

Status

  1. The position/status/rating of your Execution for a singular Play (Inactive, Behind, Partial, On Track, Done)

Impact

  1. The value that the Play creates for the business
  2. If you had to pick only one Play to run, which would it be?

Actions

  1. Suggested sequence of efforts/actions to execute the Play

Assets

  1. Examples or Templates of Documents, Emails, Presentations and other Tools (systems of record, project management, databases,...) necessary for a Play’s completion
  2. Documents or Tools linked to a Play for Teammates to leverage for the Play’s execution

Playbook Components

Function

  1. Describes a general area of responsibility for a Play
  2. The business unit who specialized in the execution of a set of Plays
  3. A grouping of Plays by the area of responsibility

Area of Execution

  1. A subset of the Function that more descriptively categorizes plays
  2. A particular division of a Team’s execution

Segment

  1. Where Plays are applied. Segments can be markets, events, campaigns, partners, customers, etc.
  2. The object of a Play’s efforts/actions
  3. In a sequential model Playbook: Gets moved through Stages as the Plays are sequentially applied to and executed upon the Segment

Stage

  1. A phase or lane of execution in the Playbook (Sequential Model Playbook). Plays are organized by Stages while Segments move through Stages. As a Segment is executed within one Stage, it will reach a maturity (defined through trigger KPIs) then be moved to the next Stage (after executives make a decision to promote).

Playboard View

  1. View of a Playbook displaying yourseparated by Stages/Lanes of execution. Plays are further categorized into separate Functions and Areas of Execution within each Stage/Lane

Portfolio View

  1. View of a Playbook displaying the Segments (markets, partners, events, etc.) separated by Stage/Lane.
  2. Displays Plays separated by Segments (Plays are shown once a Segment is selected)
  3. View displaying the Segment’s KPIs for each Stage/Lane

Execution View

  1. View of a Playbook displaying the execution status of each Play, grouped by Segments, Functions, Owners, and Stages.
  2. The Dashboard of a Team’s Execution on a Playbook

Control Tower

  1. A summary overview of the current status and accountability of the multiple Playbooks being considered, captured, or executed in a company.
  2. Dashboard which shows the status, Playbook Leader, Users, Number of Plays, Executing Plays, launch date, and action items for the Playbook. It is used extensively for setting up and configuring Playbooks.

Play Commands

Play Commands

  1. Actions at the Play level inside or outside of the Playbook. The 4 Play commands are Share, Cadence, Copy, and Delete.

Share

  1. Play Command to connect and send a Play to an outside tool with which COMPAS is integrated (currently only Slack).

Cadence

  1. Play Command to set a recurring reminder for a Play (through Slack or Email).

Copy

  1. Play Command to duplicate a Play (and all data attached to it) within a Playbook or to another Playbook.

Execution View

  1. View of a Playbook displaying the execution status of each Play, grouped by Segments, Functions, Owners, and Stages.

Delete

  1. Play Command to delete a Play (and all of its data) from a Playbook.

Playbook Platform Roles

Playbook Platform Owner

  1. This teammate is responsible for the COMPAS Playbook Platform account.  He or she will be deleted only when the customer closes its account with the COMPAS Playbook Platform. He or she can add, edit, and delete users across the Playbook Platform.

Playbook Owner

  1. This teammate created and is responsible for running, updating and executing a specific Playbook. They can not be removed from their Playbook unless by the Playbook Platform Owner. The Playbook Owners have all the same permits and access as an Admin.

Admin

  1. This teammate is responsible for helping the Playbook Owner with the tasks of improving and executing the Playbooks and Plays. The Admin(s) can modify everything related to the Playbook.

Teammate

  1. The Teammate executes Plays in the company Playbook. They can create, edit, delete, copy, update, and share Plays.
